Objectives and History

Purpose of Democracy Park

In order to honor and develop the noble spirit of democratic sacrifice of Busan citizens, which has continued from the 4.19 Revolution, the Busan-Masan Democratic Struggle, and the June Democratic Struggle, a Democracy Park will be created and utilized as a living educational site of history, thereby encouraging pride among citizens and elevating the historical status of Busan, as a cradle of democracy.

Spiritual Background

We aim to create a space that commemorates the history of Busan's past democratization movement and represents democracy, a universal human value that embodies human rights and the right to pursue happiness, for the present and the future.

Basic Concept

1A space easily accessible to citizens

Recognizing that Busan and its citizens made great efforts to protect human rights and democracy, we are going to make this an honorable place to respect the spirit of those citizens. It will honor those who pursue common human rights, democracy and improvement in the quality of life. It will be built as a place that is able to be seen anywhere as far as the Busan Metro goes, and is able to be easily approached by citizens.

2A space of living history

We are going to increase the symbolism as a democratic park by installing sculptures that symbolize ethnicity and democratic property which were gained as a result of the struggle for independence under Japanese colonialism, 4.19 Democratic Revolution, Busan & Masan democratic movement and the June Movement. In addition, we are going to make this a historical park by exhibiting relics, sculptures, poetry, paintings, and pictures which are related with the democratic movement.

3A center for cultural and academic activities

We are going to make this a space for culture and scholarship activity by planning an exhibition hall, theater, and outdoor theater in which various poetry and painting competitions, drawing exhibitions, lectures, conferences, cultural performances and film festivals will take place.

4Study and educate society

We are going to build a laboratory and library so that the people will have a place to study, as well as be educated about the Democratic struggles in the Busan area.

5A deep impression on foreigners visiting Busan

We are going to emphasize the historical value of sculptures that celebrate the Busan Democratic Movement in order to leave a lasting impression on foreign visitors as well as Busan citizens.

6Affinity with nature

This park needs to have nature friendly characteristics because it will be located on top of a mountain.
